On the occasion of World Oceans Day, students from El Limonar International School (ELIS), private educational centers, have developed various educational and direct action initiatives focused on the protection of the marine environment and local biodiversity. Among the activities are awareness campaigns, classroom projects on sustainability, and clean-up days in natural spaces along the coast of the Region of Murcia and the Vega Baja, aiming to bring students closer to the reality of marine ecosystems and foster responsible habits through education.
At ELIS Villamartín de San Miguel de Salinas, sustainability is integrated into learning from the early educational stages. Primary students participated in a beach clean-up at Campoamor beach with the company Blue Circle, where they learned about the impact of waste on the marine environment and reflected on the importance of recycling and environmental conservation. In Early Years, projects have focused on the creative reuse of materials, transforming everyday objects into new artistic creations. These activities are complemented by stories, dynamics, and projects like “Our Planet, Our Promise,” which promote reduction, reuse, and recycling.
“With initiatives like these, students reinforce their commitment to an education that transcends the classroom and connects them with the real challenges of today's world, promoting active and responsible citizenship towards the environment,” states María Dios Zetterlind, Deputy Director of ELIS Murcia.
On the occasion of World Oceans Day, the Eco-leaders—Secondary students committed to sustainability—led awareness actions for the educational community, including talks by the renowned biologist Cristina González de Boado Borrero on the importance of the Cabo de Palos–Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve. During these sessions, students learned about the ecological value of this enclave, which hosts ecosystems such as oceanic posidonia meadows, coralligenous bottoms, and species like groupers, gilt-heads, dentex, and various protected marine species. The initiative culminated in a beach clean-up day in Cabo de Palos with the company Planeta Azul, preceded by an educational session on marine conservation and concluded with waste collection in the area.
Furthermore, students held an online meeting with the Nature Club of Chirec School from India, reinforcing the international dimension of the project and the understanding that environmental care, like the ocean itself, knows no borders.
