A man has been sentenced to two years in prison for causing a fire in Vinaròs in April 2015, while attempting a prank with rubbing alcohol and a lighter.

The Second Section of the Provincial Court of Castellón issued the sentence, which also mandates the payment of compensation exceeding 30,000 euros for civil liability. This amount is intended for the neighbors whose homes and vehicle were affected by the flames.
The incident occurred around 12:15 PM on April 5, 2015, in a house in Vinaròs. The accused took a bottle of rubbing alcohol and, using a lighter, ignited it while squeezing the bottle to make the liquid spray under pressure. This maneuver caused a flare-up that set fire to an armchair in the dwelling.
The fire spread to other rooms of the property and forced the evacuation of two floors of the building. Firefighters had to rescue a neighbor and their two minor children, as they could not access the upper floors due to the intensity of the flames, which also affected the building's facade.
The fire affected a total of four homes, including the house where the flames originated, as well as common areas of the property and a vehicle. The sentence considers it proven that the fire, classified as serious, did not cause more severe material or personal damage thanks to the expertise of the firefighters who intervened in its extinction. The sentence is final after the parties reached an agreement.
