National youth handball once again demonstrated its convening power during Easter Week with the celebration of the Mediterranean Handball Cup. This event featured the presence of Gedeón Guardiola, former Olympian and member of the national handball team.
From April 2 to 5, the tournament turned the region into the nerve center of this sport, gathering 75 teams and producing an unprecedented economic return for local hospitality, thanks to the organization by QLSPORT.
The 2026 edition stood out for its ability to de-seasonalize tourism and attract thousands of visitors during the festivities. The figures are compelling: a total of 2,900 attendees, including 1,200 athletes and 1,650 companions (family and technical staff), who filled the accommodations in the area. A direct injection of almost €1,000,000 in tourist attraction is estimated, reaffirming the value of the Mediterranean Handball Cup as a regional economic engine.
Activity on the 9 enabled playing courts was uninterrupted from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM in the towns of Gandia, Llocnou de Sant Jeroni, Favara, Xeresa, Oliva, and Real de Gandia. The logistical deployment allowed for a total of 180 matches across Alevín, Infantil, Cadete, Juvenil, and Senior categories. The competition also highlighted its balance and high female participation, with 41 women's teams compared to 34 men's teams.
“"Having celebrated this edition during Easter Week has allowed handball to be the link between sport and tourism. Seeing the stands full and the impact generated on local commerce and hospitality confirms that this is the way forward."
Thanks to the official QLSPORT app, thousands of users followed the tournament's progress minute by minute, allowing the excitement from the courts to reach any part of Spain in real time. With the trophy ceremony led by former Spanish national team player Gedeón Guardiola, the tournament director, and the end of the Easter Week holidays, the Mediterranean Handball Cup closes one of its most successful editions, leaving a great impression both athletically and organizationally.
