A 2.6 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale shook the town of Oliva and nearby populations in La Safor and Marina Alta last night, according to data from the National Geographic Institute (IGN).

The tremor was recorded at 9:53 PM, with its epicenter located southeast of the municipality of Oliva, near its beach, and at an approximate depth of 8 kilometers. Although of low magnitude, the shaking generated some alarm among the population.
The perceived intensity of the earthquake varied by locality. In Oliva and Pego, an intensity of III was recorded, considered weak. In other nearby municipalities such as l'Alqueria de la Comtessa, Miramar, Piles, and Vilallonga, the intensity was II, very weak.
The seismic movement was also felt, albeit more lightly, in towns like Gandia, located about 13 kilometers from the epicenter, and in other parts of the La Safor and Marina Alta regions. So far, no material damage or injuries have been reported, despite many residents clearly feeling the tremor.
This type of low-magnitude earthquake is relatively common in the Valencian coastal area. Authorities recommend remaining calm and knowing seismic safety protocols to act correctly in the event of future occurrences.
