The Nit de l’Art in Castellón has hosted a unique artistic proposal this year at El Menador Espai Cultural. The exhibition, titled 'Atrapant lo indomable: respirant mar' (Capturing the Untamable: Breathing Sea), is by Castellón-based artist Mónica Toledo Llorens, who aims to capture the essence of the Mediterranean through a combination of painting and sculpture.
For Toledo, this participation in the Nit de l’Art has been an emotional experience. "It's my first time participating, and when the organizers told me they loved my proposal for the originality of the works, which blend pictorial and sculptural techniques, I got a huge boost," the artist admits. The exhibition, open until May 19th, stands out for its ability to recreate beaches, islands, and cliffs, capturing the light and movement of the sea.
Toledo's technique combines textured paste, pigments, vegetation, and resin applied in layers on canvas, using surface construction, scraping, and material accumulation processes. The result is works that not only represent the sea but make it present, turning it into volume, shine, and relief. The exhibition is structured as a coastal and emotional journey, dedicating spaces to the Columbretes Islands, coves of Castellón, and marine landscapes from around the world.
The artist considers the sea a refuge, and her works are the result of plastic research inspired by the landscape and the visual identity of the Mediterranean natural environment. "This is my way of capturing the untamable," says Toledo, who highlights the patience required by the creative process with resin. The exhibition has generated significant interaction with the public, who have been able to inquire about the technique and share emotional memories linked to the sea.
Beyond the Nit de l’Art, Mónica Toledo is preparing to open a physical store on San Vicente street in Castellón, which will complement the existing sales point in Valencia. Her intention is to bring her marine landscapes to a wider audience and maintain the emotional connection activated by the exhibition.
