The Department of Education, Culture, and Universities, through the Valencian Institute of Culture (IVC) and in collaboration with the Mapfre Foundation, has presented the exhibition ‘Sakiko Nomura. Tender is the Night’ at the Museum of Fine Arts of Castelló. The exhibition is dedicated to the Japanese photographer Sakiko Nomura (Shimonoseki, 1967), one of the most recognized creators on the contemporary international scene.
The selection of works allows visitors to approach the main themes and concerns that have defined her artistic production for over three decades. The exhibition, which can be visited free of charge until October 11th, is notable for its images characterized by light contrasts, nocturnal atmospheres, and a marked poetic component.
Known for her portraits and male nudes, Nomura has developed her own visual language that questions traditional conventions in the representation of the body and the photographic gaze. Her works address issues such as desire, memory, the fragility of existence, and the passage of time, incorporating floral motifs, urban landscapes, and everyday scenes.
The exhibition also emphasizes the role of photobooks in the artist's career, with over thirty published titles that form an essential part of her creative process. The exhibition brings together significant series such as ‘Night Flight’, ‘Black Darkness’, ‘Another Black Darkness’, ‘Flowers’, or ‘Fate in Spring’, which demonstrate her evolution towards suggestion, darkness, and intimacy.
Sakiko Nomura's work has been exhibited in various institutions and art centers in Europe, Asia, and America, and is part of important international collections.
