The Castellón City Council has completed the installation of a new LED-lit handrail on the interior staircase of El Fadrí, an emblematic monument in the city. This project, with an approximate budget of 30,000 euros, involved placing a 196-meter handrail equipped with LED technology along the spiral staircase, thereby improving visitor safety during their museum tour.
The mayor of Castellón, Begoña Carrasco, along with the Councilor for Infrastructure and Urban Services, Sergio Toledo; the Councilor for Culture, María España; the Director of the Museum of the City of Castellón, Ana Meseguer; and the municipal architect, Pilar Albert, visited the monument to inspect the completed work.
Carrasco emphasized the importance of investing in the city's key symbols, stating that the City Council continues to "value and restore the heritage of Castellón's citizens." The intervention, described as "highly requested" by the mayor, addressed the need for an adequate support element and sufficient lighting inside the staircase, which has 192 steps and areas with limited natural light.
The municipal architect, Pilar Albert, explained that the work was "simple" and focused on "illuminating and protecting the entire ascent and descent of the spiral staircase against possible falls," while respecting the monument's original characteristics and improving traffic flow through its five accessible floors.
Furthermore, the mayor announced that this is "just the beginning," with the City Council planning more extensive future works. These will include repairing roof leaks, protecting the capital, and safeguarding the bells. These upcoming projects, estimated at 95,000 euros, will require prior authorization from the competent Ministry of Culture, as El Fadrí is a Site of Cultural Interest.
El Fadrí, built in the late 16th century, serves as one of the permanent venues of the Museum of the City of Castellón and is one of the city's most visited monuments.
