The government team's spokesperson and acting Culture Councilor, Vicent Sales, expressed "great satisfaction" with the ruling, which confirms that the reinstatement of the double name Castelló/Castellón was legally sound. Sales asserted that the municipal government has always advocated for residents to be able to use either of the two official forms normally.
"We are very satisfied with this decision, because we have always defended the freedom of Castellón residents to name their city in Valencian or Spanish. Castelló and Castellón are part of our reality, our history, and our coexistence, and no one should impose on citizens how they should name their city," he stated.
The municipal spokesperson recalled that the reinstatement of the double toponym was one of the first decisions adopted by the local executive led by Begoña Carrasco at the beginning of the term. "The first decision that Begoña Carrasco's team made in the first government meeting was to reinstate the double name," said Sales, emphasizing that this measure fulfilled an electoral campaign commitment.
"We committed during the campaign to the citizens to reinstate the double toponym as soon as we took office at the City Council, and we delivered. It was an electoral promise, and we keep our word," he added.
Sales insisted that the judicial ruling supports the municipal government's stance from the outset. In his view, the double toponym "is legal, respects both official languages, and guarantees everyone's freedom." The spokesperson also criticized that the appeals against the bilingual toponym took a decision to court that, he argued, reflects coexistence and common sense.
"Against those who wanted to litigate a decision based on coexistence and common sense, Justice has been clear and has sided with those of us who defend that Castelló de la Plana can also be Castellón de la Plana," he indicated.
Sales concluded that "this city is bilingual, plural, and open. Therefore, the most reasonable thing is for each resident to be able to use the name they feel is their own normally, without impositions and with complete freedom."
