A decade ago, the Generalitat Valenciana conducted a comprehensive analysis of the state of its beaches and determined that 70 of them were at risk of erosion. Today, the Ministry of Environment reports that the Spanish government, responsible for interventions in the coastal strip, has only carried out 22 projects, of which a dozen are still underway.
Among the ongoing projects are the regeneration of the Marenyet and Estany beaches in Cullera, the neighboring Goleta beach in Tavernes de la Valldigna, and the construction of the riverbeds at the mouth of the Belcaire in Moncofa. However, 48 projects remain to be executed, including protection works on Morro de Gos beach in Orpesa, the extension of dikes to channel the Rei inlet in El Perelló, and the construction of a breakwater between Les Marines and Nova beaches in Dénia.
According to a report by the regional administration, in the last ten years, the ministry has promoted six projects in the area between Sagunto and Castellón (three in Almassora, two in Almenara, and one in Nules). Further south, on the coast between Valencia and Dénia, two projects have been promoted in Dénia, as well as one in Valencia and another between Gandia and Oliva.
“"There are places where the situation is distressing, where buildings are in danger. In Cabanes, there are already homes that have an eviction order. The same is happening in Guardamar del Segura. The planning has become obsolete, because erosion has continued to advance and there are places where the planned intervention would no longer be sufficient."
The Ministry has identified five localities with an urgent need for intervention: Almassora, Nules, Moncofa, Tavernes de la Valldigna, and Dénia, where beaches face a high risk of disappearing. The urgency of these actions is increasing, as coastal erosion continues to advance.
