The GRC Jan Van Arckel team has won the inaugural team time trial of the 78th edition of the Vila-real Cycling Grand Prix. The 4-kilometer race, starting and finishing at the Estadio de la Cerámica and passing through the Termet natural park, has seen Casper Van Der Woude become the first overall leader, wearing the leader's jersey in the next stage.
The initial stage offered great spectacle despite its short distance, with a technical course that tested the teams' coordination. The Dutch squad was the fastest, followed by Extremadura Pebetero in second place and CcLeida_Dpedros in third.
Casper Van Der Woude not only secured the leader's jersey but also claimed the regularity classification, sponsored by the Ajuntament de Vila-real and the Servei Municipal d’Esports. The Dutch rider was one of the standout figures of the opening day.
Additionally, local rider Héctor Domínguez, from High Level Gsport, was recognized as the best provincial cyclist. He also received accolades as the best regional cyclist, with jerseys sponsored by Quadis Marzá, Ajuntament de Morella, and Comunitat de l’Esport alongside the Ajuntament de Vila-real.
The competition continues tomorrow with the queen stage, connecting Vila-real and Morella over 137 kilometers and an demanding cumulative elevation gain of 2,742 meters. The start is scheduled for 13:00 from Plaça Major, with the finish expected at Pla dels Estudis around 16:30.
The route will include the Culla and Ares climbs, both first category, and the third category ascent to Morella. Intermediate sprints will also be contested at Coll de la Bassa and La Montalbana, key points for the secondary classification.
The organization has confirmed that new jerseys, sponsored by Fundació Caixa Rural and Proymec, will be introduced from the second stage, awarding the leader of the intermediate sprints with a blue jersey. The mountain jersey, in red, will be sponsored by Orenga Finestres i Vidres, Multiópticas Vila-real, and PMA. Furthermore, Peryser provides the official race vehicles, while GSPORT handles the jersey production.
The event will conclude on Sunday the 31st with a 126-kilometer stage between Morella and Vila-real, starting at 9:30 and finishing at the Municipal Sports City Pau Francisco Torres around 12:30, thus closing an intense edition of the Gran Premi Vila-real de Ciclisme.
