The Valencian Community is experiencing an intense heatwave, atypical for May. On Friday, thermometers soared above 30 °C, marking the hottest day in a decade at this point in the year, according to records from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). These high temperatures were preceded by a tropical night, with lows above 20 °C in much of the Valencia and Castellón coastlines.
The capital of La Plana Alta, Castellón de la Plana, has broken a thermal record, experiencing the warmest night registered in over a century between January and May, with a minimum of 21.4 °C. Since at least 1911, no night before June had recorded such figures, surpassing the 21.1 °C noted on May 16, 1961, and the 21 °C on May 30, 2010. In Valencia, the minimum was 20.5 °C, an infrequent temperature for May, although with higher precedents like 22.4 °C on May 16, 1961.
During the day, thermometers surged in many areas, comfortably exceeding 30 °C. Municipalities in the interior of La Ribera Alta or El Camp de Túria recorded over 37 °C, such as Torís, Carcaixent, and Llíria. Xàtiva, in La Costera, registered the highest temperature in the Valencian Community with 37.5 °C. The provincial capitals reached 33.5 °C in Castellón de la Plana, 34.6 °C in Valencia, and 31.3 °C in Alicante. The mildest maximums were recorded in the interior of Castellón, such as in Castellfort (28.5 °C).
Aemet highlights that exceeding 30 °C in Valencia between January and May is uncommon, having occurred only eight times since 1920. Although the first 30 °C of the year arrived somewhat late in the city this year, a statistically significant long-term trend is observed: 30 °C days are occurring earlier each year. Between 1900 and 2026, the earliest date was March 2, 1987.
