The Borriol City Council has kicked off its 3rd Historical Memory Conference, an edition that this year focuses exclusively on highlighting and incorporating a gender perspective into democratic memory. The opening event, held yesterday afternoon in the old Town Hall building, served to officially inaugurate the exhibition 'Women of the Republic Making History'.
The exhibition, which will be open to the public until June 26th, is the result of collaboration between the Department of Equality and the Heritage and Museum area of Borriol. The exhibition has been loaned by the Feminist Association Dones en Acció of Chiva and Aula Violeta, and involves the participation of the Group for the Research of Historical Memory of Castellón.
The trajectory of this exhibition was highlighted; it began in 2006 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the proclamation of the Second Republic. Initially comprising 34 panels, ongoing research has led to it now featuring nearly 200 references to women who were influential in the conquest of fundamental rights, such as women's suffrage and women's access to public life and education.
On a local and provincial level, organizers emphasized the importance of showcasing key figures from the region featured in the exhibition. These include the rationalist pedagogue Pilar Grangel Arrufat, affiliated with the CNT, and Enriqueta Agut Armer, a teacher and inspector who experienced exile in Mexico.
Additionally, the event included an emotional moment of remembrance for Consuelo, a founder and active member of the local research group, described as a woman of great courage and enthusiasm in defending the recovery of her town's history.
