The mouth of the Algar River in Altea offers a 3.5-kilometer circular hiking trail, ideal for families, combining nature, sea views, and the observation of local fauna and flora.

As the weekend approaches, many families look for different plans to enjoy time together without extensive travel. An outdoor getaway can be a simple and special way to enjoy the day. In the province of Alicante, a good option is a quiet and accessible hiking trail, allowing for leisurely walks and nature observation.
One such trail is located in Altea, next to the urban center, at the mouth of the Algar River. This is a natural area of great ecological value and quite unique within the province. The Algar estuary is part of the Wetland Catalog of the Valencian Community and offers a simple walk through vegetation, dirt paths, viewpoints, and river-associated fauna.
The route is circular, about 3.5 kilometers long, and has almost no elevation gain, making it suitable for practically any age and physical condition. The trail runs along both banks of the river and can be done on foot or by bicycle. It starts and ends at the same point, simplifying organization for families.
Along the itinerary, several informative panels help identify the most representative species of the environment. Among the birds that can be observed in the area are the grey heron, the cattle egret, the little egret, the moorhen, the mallard, the cormorant, and the coots. There are also references to butterflies such as the gatekeeper or the swallowtail, as well as various pollinating insects. This information turns the walk into a small educational activity for children, who can learn to recognize animals and plants while walking along the river.
The route can be done in either direction, as being circular there is no getting lost and the difficulty is practically the same. One of the most interesting points comes when crossing the river to return along the other bank, where in some clear parts of the water, fish, frogs, and even harmless water snakes can be seen.
To reach the start of the route, head to the Palau d’Esports Villa de Altea and park in the area behind the football fields, on Camí de l’Algar street. From there, you can start the walk in your preferred direction. The excursion allows you to enjoy a well-maintained space, with poplar plantations, riverside vegetation, citrus groves, and large farmhouses. It is a short, flat, natural route, close to the urban center, and ending by the sea, ideal for disconnecting for a few hours.
