A young immigrant of Moroccan origin has been detained in Altea, in the Marina Baixa region. He is in the process of regularizing his situation in Spain while remaining held at the foreigner detention center (CIE) in Valencia, with an order for expulsion from the country.
The young man, who has resided in Altea for two years, is undergoing an asylum application process and has already submitted the formal request to attempt to regularize his situation. The detention was carried out by the Guardia Civil on May 6th.
After detaining him, they transferred him to the investigating court of Benidorm, where he made a statement. According to his legal team, during the statement he appeared nervous and had difficulty clearly explaining his employment situation and future plans in Spain.
Currently, he is held at the CIE of Valencia, although the defense maintains that he met the requirements for residency to qualify for an extraordinary regularization process. In this regard, they assure that he has no criminal record, is registered with the local authorities, and has worked in Spain.
On May 11th, the regularization application was submitted within the period open until June 30th, and in parallel, they have requested international protection with the aim of halting the expulsion.
According to the defense, the young man allegedly left his country for religious reasons, as he is Christian, and is now awaiting a response on his asylum request. If denied, appeals could be filed. Several support platforms have called for the suspension of the expulsion procedure while the detainee's administrative situation is resolved.
