This surgical intervention represents an important advance in the bariatric surgery program that the hospital has been developing since 2017. Until now, more complex operations, such as gastric bypass, were performed centrally at the General Hospital of Alicante.
The reorganization of healthcare areas, which integrates the hospitals of Sant Joan d'Alacant, Dénia, and Marina Baixa, together with the impetus from the management team, has allowed the implementation of this technique directly at the Marina Baixa Hospital. This was announced by the department in a statement this Wednesday.
“"The team has long had the necessary training to perform this technique. It is not a recent learning, but the response to an assistance need that we must now cover."
Gastric bypass is an intervention indicated for patients with specific clinical characteristics, as it combines the reduction of stomach size with a malabsorption component. This promotes more effective weight loss in selected cases.
With this advance, the Marina Baixa University Hospital expands its capacity to treat obesity with advanced surgical techniques and strengthens specialized care in the region, facilitating closer assistance for patients.
