Xàbia's local government, comprising PP and Ciudadanos por Jávea, will present an investment of 1.2 million euros at the upcoming extraordinary plenary session to develop the plot designated for the provisional school. This facility, which will use temporary classrooms, could be operational for years, leading to the cancellation of the second sports pavilion planned for the same land. Xàbia's shortage of sports facilities is thus extended.
The 1.2 million allocation is part of a credit modification that includes other municipal investments. While the construction of the temporary classrooms will be funded by the Conselleria d'Educació (Regional Ministry of Education), the land development is the responsibility of the town council. The high cost is attributed to the significant size of the plot, approximately 10,000 square meters. The Education Councilor, Mavi Pérez, had previously acknowledged that around 7,000 m2 would have sufficed for the provisional school, but stated that no other plots were available.
The PSOE argues that alternative locations do exist and could have been considered with a modification to the General Plan, similar to the recent one made to increase tourist housing. According to the socialists, this decision would have prevented the loss of the sports pavilion and resolved the educational collapse without worsening the sports issue, making it one of the legislature's major controversies.
The minority local government will require support to approve the credit modification. In a previous session, the PP and CpJ managed to have the temporary classrooms located on the Freginal plot thanks to the abstention of Compromís. The PSOE appealed this decision, arguing it required an absolute majority, but the executive will propose dismissing this appeal at the next plenary session.
In addition to the 1.2 million, there is a prior reserve of 350,000 euros to replace the temporary classrooms at the CEIP Graüll. Although this is a responsibility of the Generalitat, it refuses to fund it, arguing it will cover a new school. In total, the expenditure amounts to 1.55 million euros for the municipal coffers.
