The vehicle for hire (VTC) platform Uber is now fully operational in Dénia, accessible via its website and application. This service not only connects the capital of Marina Alta with other towns but also accepts urban trips within the municipal area of Dénia.
Fares for interurban journeys can vary significantly; for example, a trip from Dénia's urban center to València's Joaquín Sorolla station can cost around 140 euros for a four-person vehicle, and up to 220 euros for six. To Alicante airport, the cost can be about 128 euros. Urban trips, such as from the bus station to an area of Les Rotes, range between 19 and 29 euros, depending on vehicle capacity.
Uber's arrival multiplies the public transport options in Dénia. Within the city, this service complements the new urban bus, which will start operating in June, and the expansion of the taxi fleet, which will incorporate six new licenses this summer, increasing the total to 35. This expansion aims to alleviate the taxi shortage experienced in recent summers.
Furthermore, Uber presents itself as an alternative for connecting Dénia with other cities, stations, or airports, especially given the deficiencies of interurban transport in Marina Alta, with uncompetitive frequencies of regular bus lines and the long duration of the Alicante TRAM.
“"VTCs will be welcome if they provide new mobility that coexists with the rest of the public services that already exist."
The Mobility Councilor positively assessed this new option but clarified that the implementation of this service depends exclusively on the Generalitat Valenciana. The city council will raise a query to determine if VTCs can perform urban trips within the municipal area. The Local Police will carry out surveillance tasks to ensure that this modality complies with regulations, without demonizing it.
