The town of Pego has hosted the events for the tenth anniversary of the Associació per la Memòria Històrica de Pego Maria Dolors Lloret, where the Second Republic and the fundamental role of women during that period were remembered.

Republican memory has taken to the streets of Pego to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Associació per la Memòria Històrica de Pego Maria Dolors Lloret. The events, which took place this weekend, included a concentration and flower offering in Maria Cambrils Square, where the importance of the Second Republic as a period of great hope and social advancement was highlighted.
A member of the association emphasized that April 14, 1931 marked the beginning of a political project based on social justice, equality, and fraternity. Special emphasis was placed on the role of women, symbolized by the purple stripe of the flag, representing their emergence into public life and their aspiration for a freer life, with the right to study and work.

"The fight for rights, for peace, and for democracy does not belong only to history books, but remains necessary now, in a time when discourses of hatred and exclusion are once again being heard."

The speech also addressed the violent interruption of this progress with the 1936 coup d'état, which led to a long period of repression. A call was made to keep alive the memory of those who believed in a more just society, understanding that remembering is a way to defend the future. The Dones Cabal association also participated in the event, and the song Homenatge a Teresa by Ovidi Montllor was performed.
Subsequently, participants proceeded to Alcalde Aquilino Barrachina Avenue, where a space for homage was requested for his contribution to the defense of democracy. The events concluded in the municipal cemetery with a flower offering at the monument to republican women, where a manifesto was read warning that, without historical memory, democracy remains exposed to old ghosts returning with new faces.
