On May 28, 2026, Xàbia's local government, comprising PP and CpJ, announced the completion of the desalination plant's reversal, stating it would become public and managed by Amjasa. However, the agreement approved in an extraordinary plenary session still required a 30-day public exposure period after its publication in the Official Provincial Gazette (BOP).
The general meeting of Amjasa held on June 12, 2026, revealed that Xàbia's City Council delayed sending this agreement to the BOP for 14 days, finally doing so the day before. The PSOE spokesperson, Josep Chulvi, strongly criticized this delay, pointing out that it represents "another 14 lost days that cost Xàbia more money" and demonstrates the "lack of interest" from the mayor, Rosa Cardona, in the "most important issue of the legislature".
Chulvi attributed this delay to an economic detriment for Xàbia, estimating that 270,000 euros were paid to Acciona, the private company managing the plant, in 2025 alone. The socialists believe the plant could have been public since the beginning of the year. Chulvi urged the mayor "this time, please, do not blame the technicians".
Mayor Rosa Cardona justified the delay by citing a "computer failure" that prevented the document from being uploaded and published in the corresponding application, calling them "external causes beyond our control." This explanation did not convince Chulvi, who recalled that Xàbia had published other agreements in the BOP on previous days, including those from the ordinary plenary session held just after the desalination plant's.
Due to this situation, the socialists voted against Amjasa's 2025 general accounts. Chulvi insisted that the vote was not against the technicians but against the mayor's management of the public company's board of directors. Cardona accused the PSOE of "political pressure on water" and of trying to "cut her throat" with this rejection, despite the company's profits of 1.5 million euros.
The plant's manager, Josep Lluís Henarejos, asked the PSOE to reconsider its vote, arguing that the general accounts are a technical document, not political, and that the presented figures are "science fiction accounts" as future economic performance cannot be predicted. He emphasized the need for a "unitary position" to assume the plant's management.
Finally, the accounts were approved with the support of the remaining groups: PP, CpJ, Compromís, and Vox. The Vox spokesperson, Josep Marcos Pons, stated his support based on Amjasa's good management during his tenure leading the water cycle, although he acidly remarked that the mayor later dismissed him.
