Artist Maria del Mar Bonet filled the Espai Joan Castejón in Dénia to present her painting exhibition and offer a talk where she shared her reflections on art, music, and personal convictions.

The Mallorcan singer-songwriter, who describes herself as a «Sunday painter», has revealed her more intimate facet as a visual artist. As she explains, painting is a very personal experience of «joyful solitude» that has accompanied her since childhood. She always carries a sketchbook and her watercolors in her suitcase, seeking inspiration in the light and details that captivate her.
The Espai Joan Castejón at the Casa de Cultura de Dénia hosts the exhibition La veu a la mà (The Voice in the Hand), a display of her paintings. The public, eager to reconnect with the artist, filled the hall. Maria del Mar Bonet explained that the Antoni Miró Contemporary Art Chair asked her to create this exhibition, which has already been in Alcoi and Xàtiva and, after Dénia, will be shown in Gandia.

"I have sung in Tokyo, the United States, Canada, or Argentina, and I have always done so in Catalan, in my language; no one ever asked me why I didn't sing in English."

During her speech, the artist spoke of her fascination with volcanoes and the «offering to the landscape» that her painting represents. She emphasized the importance of keeping horizons unaltered and criticized the «urbanizations» that destroy the territory. She also denounced the «indifference of governments» to deaths in the Mediterranean and called it «shameful» that migrants have to risk their lives.
In the musical sphere, Maria del Mar Bonet recalled how she rejected offers to sing in French or go to Eurovision, always choosing to remain faithful to her language. She lamented the disappearance of record stores, noting that the sale of records in Catalan is crucial for local music. Finally, she expressed her love for Cuba and Morocco, highlighting the beauty of their landscapes and the harsh living conditions of women in the latter.
The mayor of Dénia, Vicent Grimalt, presented Maria del Mar Bonet with a ceramic plate adorned with Posidonia oceanica leaves and the reissued book Sin velas, desvelada (Without Sails, Awakened), by Juan Chabás, a writer from Dénia of the Generation of '27.
