Social Security affiliation in the region saw an increase of 1,584 people (+2.42%) during May, marking the best figure for this month since 2021 and significantly exceeding the average of the last four years. The total number of affiliates has reached 67,132, a new historic peak that could be surpassed in June if seasonal trends continue.
Year-on-year, La Marina Alta has added 2,641 more affiliates compared to last year, a growth of 4.10%, which is more than a point higher than the rate recorded in the previous year. This advance is supported by a diversified base, with notable contributions from sectors such as computer repair and maintenance (+975), real estate activities (+863), hospitality (+789), commerce (+500), and sports and recreational activities (+115).
May's dynamism is strongly seasonal, with the hospitality sector leading job creation with 826 more affiliations, followed by construction (+223). Affiliation has increased for both men and women, with a slightly higher growth in the male group. Self-employment also shows a positive trend, with an increase of 139 people in the last month and 453 over the past year, reaching 19,600 individuals.
In contrast, registered unemployment shows a more moderate trend. La Marina Alta has reduced unemployment by 74 people (-0.99%), a figure lower than in the previous three years. Excluding 2020, this is the worst May figure since 2008. This reduced intensity has also been observed in recent months, with unemployment reductions consistently lower than the previous year.
Despite this, unemployment remains at historically low levels, with May closing at 7,394 unemployed individuals, the lowest figure since June 2008. The year-on-year reduction is 329 people (-4.26%), although a moderation compared to previous years is also evident. The region has now seen 60 consecutive months of year-on-year decreases in unemployment, with a notable reduction in youth unemployment to below 350 people.
Unemployment among the foreign population has decreased by 43 people, standing at 1,991. While this decrease is smaller than in May 2025 (-70), this difference alone does not explain the moderation in regional unemployment, suggesting broader factors affecting the overall labor market. Female unemployment has fallen by 36 people (-0.84%) to 4,246 women (57.42% of the total), while male unemployment has decreased by 38 people (-1.19%) to 3,148.
By sector, unemployment has decreased in services (-64), construction (-12), and industry (-9), while agriculture remains stable. Permanent contracts now account for 73.10% of the 3,301 registered contracts, consolidating a structural change and placing La Marina Alta with a proportion significantly higher than the national, provincial, and regional averages.
