The Alicante Provincial Council has announced the creation of a permanent working group to boost cycling tourism on the Costa Blanca, seeking to coordinate efforts between administrations and the tourism sector.

This initiative was unveiled during the 1st Sustainable Cycling Tourism Conference, held in Tàrbena, where institutional representatives, technicians, and professionals linked to sports tourism gathered. The main objective is to strengthen this tourism segment in the province, considered one of the fastest-growing.

"Cycling tourism has become one of the fastest-growing tourism products in the province thanks to the climate, landscape diversity, and the existing network of secondary roads and mountain routes in the territory."

The new working group will allow for regular meetings to agree on measures aimed at improving infrastructure, communication, and optimizing services related to cycling tourism. The conclusions drawn from these meetings will also be forwarded to the Central Administration, the General Directorate of Traffic, and law enforcement agencies.
During the conference, the importance of regions such as Marina Alta, Marina Baixa, and the interior of the province within European cycling tourism was highlighted, especially due to the arrival of professional teams for winter training camps on the Costa Blanca. The growth of specialized infrastructure and services was emphasized, including marked routes, internationally recognized mountain passes, bike lanes, greenways, and cyclist-friendly hotels.
Additionally, bicycle rental, repair, and transport companies have joined, along with complementary services such as guides, sports nutrition, and physical recovery. The director of the Costa Blanca Tourist Board explained that best practices from other destinations were analyzed for their adaptation to the province of Alicante.

"The objective is to develop a functional, coordinated working methodology that allows for sustained and consensual actions."

The Provincial Council argued that cycling tourism contributes to a more sustainable and deseasonalized tourism model, as it generates economic activity throughout the year and promotes the revitalization of inland municipalities. Representatives from municipalities such as Calpe, Altea, Dénia, Xàbia, Benissa, Teulada-Moraira, Xaló, or La Vall de Laguar participated in the conference, in addition to tourism entities, sports federations, hotel companies, and public administrations.
