Filmmaker Pablo de la Reina has begun shooting the experimental documentary ‘La niña del sol naciente’ in Dénia, a sensory portrait of the city exploring its identity.

The capital of the Marina Alta is becoming a cinematic stage with the filming of ‘La niña del sol naciente’, a documentary by director and director of photography Pablo de la Reina. The experimental piece aims to offer a personal and evocative look at Dénia, encompassing both its traditional spaces and its contemporary side.
The project focuses on the city's diversity, interviewing figures such as fishermen, farmers, chefs, painters, singers, and photographers. Among the participants are fisherman Jaime Donderis and photographer Tino Calvo.
Filming, which began last week in various locations including a fishing boat to capture prawn fishing activities, Les Rotes, and the port, will continue throughout the summer. The documentary's editing is scheduled for autumn.
‘La niña del sol naciente’ is defined as an intimate and sensory project that addresses the duality between tradition and contemporary artistic pursuit. Far from a conventional format, it is conceived as an emotional experience that makes landscape, sound, and emotions the protagonists of a narrative about belonging and memory.
The film proposes a poetic journey connecting manual labor and maritime life with a generation of artists and workers who, despite having to leave their homes to seek opportunities, find the origin of their inspiration in Dénia. Special attention is paid to the sensory dimension, aiming for each scene to be tangible, from the smell of the sea to the sound of the port.
Visually, the documentary opts for a naturalistic and contemplative aesthetic, featuring sunrises, sunsets, and nighttime moments that create an atmosphere between the real and the fantastical. The soundtrack, created by Altea Mainar and Jabi Jiménez, will guide the viewer on this emotional journey.
Pablo de la Reina, a director of photography with experience in London, Barcelona, and Madrid, presents with this project a deeply human portrait of Dénia, exploring the conflict between belonging to a place and the need to leave it to grow.
