The Dénia-Gandia tram project remains under study, a situation that has persisted for decades. The Generalitat's 2026 budget includes a 95,000 euro allocation exclusively for "the preparation of preliminary technical reports and studies." This financial allocation has been similar in the 2024 and 2025 budgets, which earmarked 25,000 and 100,000 euros respectively.
The aim is for the platform works to be put out to tender next year, according to sources from the Valencian PP, who anticipate completing the study in September. However, the mayors of Dénia and Gandia, Rafa Carrió (Compromís) and José Luis Prieto (PSOE), consider the allocation an "insult to the citizens' intelligence" and are calling for greater impetus with a definitive technical study.
There is a debate about the usefulness of a simple tram to connect the Marina Alta with La Safor. While some politicians believe it would only serve tourism, others advocate for a commuter train to facilitate travel to València. The Valencian PP suggests the intention is to create a platform compatible with both trams and trains, but this would require the involvement of the Central Government.
The project's slow progress occurs despite the works being scheduled for completion by 2030. The political landscape, with upcoming regional and national elections, could influence the project's future, although historically the Dénia-Gandia connection has remained stalled regardless of the governing parties' political affiliation.
