Yesterday afternoon, smoke was detected on Tamarits Avenue, in the tourist area of Xàbia's Arenal. The response was immediate, with the Local Police, Civil Protection, and firefighters from the Alicante Consortium – who maintain a summer detachment in the municipality – attending the scene. They quickly extinguished what appeared to be a campfire, preventing the fire from spreading.
The source was located within a dense thicket of mimosa bushes, where litter such as cans and other debris had accumulated, possibly indicating someone had spent the night there. The fire outbreak was close to residential blocks and the Saladar area, a former wetland where other fires have occurred previously. Last summer, a fire scorched reeds and bushes in this same area.
The Arenal area is highly urbanized, with ongoing construction, while El Saladar serves as an important green lung for the town, in addition to its role in regulating torrential rains.
