Future resident doctors from all over Spain begin today, Monday, to choose their specialty and reference hospital, with a total of 916 MIR places available in the centers of the Valencian Community.

This process is crucial for the professional trajectory of residents and represents a challenge for the departments of the Valencian Community, which seek to fill all the places offered, a goal achieved in the last two years. The offer of 916 places is good news in a context of doctor shortages, according to information from the Ministry of Health.
The 2026 call marks a record, with an increase of 57 positions compared to last year. One of the novelties is the introduction of the new specialty of Emergency Medicine, which offers nine places in its first year in the Valencian Community: five in hospitals in València (La Fe, Arnau de Vilanova, General, Doctor Peset and Clínico), three in Alicante (Sant Joan, General de Alicante and General de Elche) and one in the province of Castellón (General).
Most of the offer is concentrated, once again, in Family and Community Medicine, with 249 positions available, 16 more than last year. This commitment by the Ministry of Health to train more professionals is reflected in the requests from the minister to the Ministry to relax the requirements for teaching units, with the aim of increasing MIR places by up to 20%. After Family Medicine, the specialties with the most places are Pediatrics (60), Anesthesiology and Resuscitation (50), Internal Medicine (39), Radiodiagnosis (37), Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology (36) and Obstetrics and Gynecology (32).
Surgical specialties tend to fill up quickly due to their limited offer. Last year, Dermatology and Plastic Surgery were the first to be covered, with twelve and five places respectively. These modalities are highly demanded in private healthcare and do not usually require on-call duties. In the following days, Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology, Pediatrics and Radiodiagnosis were also among the first to be chosen.
