The city of Torrent is preparing to celebrate Corpus Christi, one of the oldest, most solemn, and deeply rooted religious festivities on the local calendar. The celebration, whose main day will be next Sunday, June 7th, with the Parade and Procession, will fill the streets with tradition, faith, color, and popular culture. This year, the festival will feature 17 'clavarios' (standard-bearers) and will be presided over by the chief 'clavario', Francisco Ros Mora.
The festivity, considered one of the most important religious manifestations in the city, combines liturgical character with the richness of Valencian cultural heritage. The events began on May 25th with a conference and continue throughout this week with traditional masses at 7:30 PM in the Parroquia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora.
This Wednesday, June 3rd, the imposition of medals to the 'clavarios' will take place, an emotional moment, along with the start of the traditional sung 'trisagio'. Additionally, the exhibition “40 Anys fent Corpus” will be inaugurated at the Antic Mercat, organized by the Grup de Ball de l’Ú i Dos de Torrent del Llar Antonià, showcasing four decades of recovering Corpus traditions. The exhibition will be open until Friday.
As a prelude to the main day, on Saturday, June 6th, at 10:00 PM, the traditional Corpus Concert will be held in the plaza de la Iglesia, performed by the Banda Sinfónica de la Unió Musical de Torrent.
On Sunday, June 7th, the central day will begin at 12:00 PM with the Solemn Eucharist in the Parroquia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora, where the 'clavarios' for 2027 will be appointed. In the afternoon, at 6:30 PM, there will be a concelebrated mass with the children who received their First Communion this year. Afterwards, the traditional 'Enramà de la Murta' will take place using decorated carts.
At 7:00 PM, the Corpus Christi Parade, organized by the Grup de Ball de l’Ú i Dos, will parade through the streets with traditional figures such as the 'nanos' (dwarfs), the municipal giants Amparín and Jaume, the 'cabuts' (big-heads), the Moma, the Magrana, among others. This year, figures of the four evangelists will be introduced. This edition commemorates the forty years of recovery of these elements by the group.
At 7:30 PM, the Solemn Procession of the Most Holy Sacrament will begin, presided over by all the priests of the Arciprestazgo Mare de Déu del Pòpul. Participants will include the Obrería del Santísimo Sacramento, the 'clavarios', representatives from all the parishes, the First Communion children, and the mayor of Torrent, Amparo Folgado, along with members of the municipal corporation. The procession will be accompanied musically by the band of the Unió Musical de Torrent.
The events will conclude with a fireworks display by Pirotecnia Caballer Fireworks Star & Sanmartin. The program will officially close on Monday, June 8th, with a mass in suffrage for the deceased members of the Obrería.
As is customary since 2008, the Torrent City Council will install a large floral tapestry with Corpus Christi motifs in the Plaza Mayor, which can be visited from Saturday afternoon. The composition, created by a local florist, will beautify the urban environment.
Mayor Amparo Folgado has encouraged participation, highlighting the importance of Corpus Christi as part of the city's historical and cultural identity and thanking the Grup de Ball de l’Ú i Dos for keeping the traditional characters alive.
Torrent's connection with Corpus Christi dates back to 1852, the year the Sociedad de la Obrería was founded to ensure the continuity of the festivity. More than 170 years later, the initiative remains active thanks to the work of the Obrería del Santísimo Sacramento, the 'clavarios', the parishes, and the city.
