The Department of Urban Services and the Centre Verd are carrying out a first biological treatment on the Ficus Nitida specimens in the municipality. The objective is to naturally combat the pests affecting this species, especially with the arrival of spring and rising temperatures.
This innovative technique involves the introduction of beneficial insects, such as Anthocoris and Cryptolaemus, which are effective predators of the most common pests in Ficus Nitida. This avoids the use of chemical products and minimizes environmental impact, protecting both people and other animal species.
Furthermore, a new biological treatment is scheduled for the coming weeks to control the aphid that affects jacarandas during their flowering season. This aphid is responsible for the uncomfortable honeydew that dirties streets and vehicles, and similar actions last year proved very effective in reducing these nuisances.
“"These treatments protect the environment, are not harmful to people or other animals, and are especially suitable for street trees."
Biological control, although it requires exhaustive technical monitoring and its results are more progressive, offers significant benefits. It respects native fauna, promotes urban biodiversity, and contributes to maintaining the natural balance of ecosystems, improving the quality of the municipality's green spaces.
