The Moncada Merchants Association has filed an administrative lawsuit with the High Court of Justice of the Valencian Community against agreements approved by the City Council's plenary on February 26th, concerning the urban development of a future shopping center.
The decision to appeal was unanimously approved at an extraordinary assembly on May 18th, after analyzing the implications of the planned urban project for Sevilla, Quart, Olocau streets, and Camino del Cementerio. The entity aims to defend the interests of local commerce and restaurants against the construction of a new shopping center.
The lawsuit was formally filed on June 8th. The association has emphasized that this action does not oppose economic development or new investments in the municipality. However, it believes that an urban transformation of this magnitude must ensure a proper balance between new commercial developments and the protection of the existing economic fabric.
“
"Local commerce is part of Moncada's identity. It generates employment, economic activity, proximity, and helps maintain lively and safe streets. Our goal is to defend a balanced city model where progress is compatible with the survival and strengthening of traditional commerce."
In parallel to the legal route, the ACM is working on a series of proposals and allegations to enhance the competitiveness of urban commerce. Among the proposed measures are improvements to sidewalks and pedestrian accessibility, adaptation and expansion of parking areas, enhanced public lighting, reinforced cleaning and urban maintenance, resurfacing, and the creation of more attractive spaces to foster commercial activity.
The entity believes that proximity commerce cannot compete on equal terms with a shopping center solely from an economic standpoint, thus advocating for the municipality to embrace an attractive urban model that invites residents and visitors to stroll, shop, and consume in the city center. Measures to prevent direct and disproportionate competition with existing businesses will also be defended.
“
"The defense of local commerce is not solely a legal matter. It also involves improving the city, making our streets more attractive, and ensuring that those who have invested in Moncada over the years can continue their activities under fair conditions."
The Moncada Merchants Association has reiterated its willingness for dialogue and collaboration with the involved administrations, while reaffirming its commitment to utilize available legal and public participation mechanisms to defend its members' interests and contribute to the balanced development of Moncada.
