This intervention represents another step in the recovery of the municipality's historical heritage. The 'escarabatets', original ceramic pieces from the Castell, were removed in the 1970s when the building was almost demolished to construct a new town hall.
At that time, the Diputación de València intervened to preserve the property, but the original ceramic pavements were dismantled. The official chronicler of the municipality, Mateu Rodrigo Lizondo, was key in preserving these pieces, cleaning, classifying, and storing them in orange boxes to ensure their conservation.
The pieces, dating from the 15th to the 18th century, spent decades changing locations within the Castell and even disappeared for a time, until they were recovered a few years ago. After a subsequent selection, more than 500 Gothic tiles in good condition were counted.
Since then, the tiles have been kept in the municipal archive, awaiting an intervention that would allow their restitution. With the current restoration project, the City Council believes that the possibility of returning them to their place of origin is finally open, thus completing a long-awaited recovery.
“"This action allows us to close a circle started more than half a century ago and recover a part of local history, in addition to recognizing the work of those who knew how to preserve patrimonial pieces that at the time could have been lost."
With this intervention, Albalat dels Sorells will not only recover an architectural element of the Castell but also a part of the collective memory linked to one of its most emblematic buildings.
