The Burjassot City Council has launched a new dog-assisted therapy leisure project, aimed at all minors with disabilities aged between 4 and 15 years registered in the town, following the success of a previous initiative.

This program offers 25 spots that will be distributed into small groups to enjoy the activity until next November, once all applications have been processed. Sessions will take place on Mondays and/or Fridays in the afternoons at the Díaz Pintado socio-educational center. It is essential that participants do not have phobias or allergies to animals, as explained by the council.
Dog-assisted therapy represents a crucial therapeutic intervention for minors with disabilities, as it integrates physical, emotional, cognitive, and social dimensions that conventional therapies alone do not always achieve so completely and naturally. It simultaneously addresses multiple areas of the minor's development, such as motor skills, communication, emotional regulation, social skills, and cognition.

Unlike traditional therapies that work on each area separately, the dog acts as a mediator that naturally integrates all these aspects during interaction.

The relationship with the animal teaches empathy, responsibility, turn-taking, rule-following, impulse control, and emotional regulation. These competencies are transferable to human interactions and form the basis for successful social integration. Therefore, incorporating this therapy is not an optional complement, but an evidence-based strategy that maximizes the minor's developmental potential and promotes a better quality of life.
The deadline for submitting applications will be open from Thursday, April 16, until Sunday, April 26, inclusive. Applications can be submitted electronically through the City Council's e-headquarters or, if assistance is needed, by calling 661 88 17 48 to resolve doubts and arrange an appointment for in-person submission.
The provisional lists of admitted participants will be published on May 7, and the appeals period will extend until May 21. The definitive lists will be made public on Wednesday, May 27. The informational meeting with participating families will be on Friday, May 29. This project will be developed thanks to the joint work of the departments of Social Services and Education.
