The call for bids, which seeks artisan hands for the creation of these unique pieces, is divided into two lots with a total value of 94,380 euros. The first lot, valued at 49,005 euros, corresponds to the espolines for the Fallera Mayors of València, while the second, with a budget of 45,375 euros, is allocated to the Child Fallera Mayors.
“"The color chosen by each senior and child Fallera Mayor is one of the most anticipated secrets of each reign, as tradition dictates that each one selects the colors of her own espolín after her appointment, which takes place every October."
These fabrics, which are one of the most symbolic elements of the attire of the top representatives of the Fallas, must be ready by November 30 of each year. This will allow the costumes to be made for the Falleras to debut at their exaltation ceremonies, ensuring the continuity of a tradition that combines festivity, identity, and artisan craft.
The espolines are pieces of the highest quality, crafted in manual artisan workshops. The tender specifications state that the manufacturing must be entirely artisanal, using traditional Valencian craftsmanship methods from the 18th and 19th centuries, without incorporating mechanisms powered by any energy other than the weaver's effort and skill. To ensure compliance with these requirements, workshops must submit a certificate from ATEVAL (Association of Textile Entrepreneurs of the Valencian Community).
For the Fallera Mayors of València, each espolín will require 13.50 meters of fabric, woven on a 400-needle machine in mirror symmetry, featuring 33 colors. For the Child Fallera Mayors, 12.50 meters of fabric will be needed, using an 800-needle machine for an asymmetrical design and 36 colors. Additionally, the long-sleeved bodices will require 3.50 meters of plain artisanal silk in the same color as the espolín, a crucial detail as each Fallera will choose her colors after her appointment.
