The Brotherhood of the Virgin of Tobacco Workers and Firefighters of València will celebrate this Saturday, April 18, with a mass at the Church of San Pascual Bailón and a procession through the Exposición neighborhood, reviving a tradition not held since 2015.

This Marian devotion is closely linked to the history of the old tobacco factory in València, now the municipal headquarters of the City Council and popularly known as Tabacalera. The image was commissioned in 1940 by a group of factory workers, the well-known cigar makers, who for decades kept their devotion alive as a symbol of identity for the neighborhood and the workplace itself.
In 2002, the workers ceded the image to the municipal Fire Department with the aim of it becoming part of the future Firefighters Museum planned for the central park on Avenida de la Plata. As a result of this collaboration, in 2003 the Brotherhood of the Virgin of Tobacco Workers and Firefighters of València was officially constituted and registered, and has since guarded the image.
Over the years, the Virgin has had different locations: initially, it was housed in the City Museum and, later, it was moved to the current municipal headquarters of Tabacalera, where it is colloquially known as the Virgin of Tabacalera. The image, a work by the artist Vicente Benedito Baró, is a replica of the Virgin of the Forsaken, patroness of València, and features the characteristic iconographic elements: the child in arms and the figures of the forsaken. It also has a complete trousseau, notably its bone-colored mantle.
The impetus of the Brotherhood, chaired by the inspector of the Fire Department, along with the collaboration of the València City Council and the Brotherhood of the Followers of the Virgin, has allowed the recovery of a tradition that had not been celebrated since 2015. This year, the event also coincides with the 86th anniversary of the image.
For this reason, a day has been organized for this Saturday that will include a mass at the Church of San Pascual Bailón, followed by a procession through the streets of the Exposición neighborhood. Finally, the image will return to the Tabacalera headquarters, where it can be visited and venerated by both municipal workers and citizens. Members of the Brotherhood and the Brotherhood of the Followers of the Virgin have today supervised the condition of the image and prepared every detail to ensure it is in perfect condition for this reunion with the faithful.
