Under the theme “Urban Memory Stories: Rediscovering Air-Raid Shelters,” the program, announced by the Valencia City Council, will run from Friday, April 17, to Sunday, April 19. This initiative focuses on one of the city's lesser-known heritage sites, offering a unique opportunity to explore these historical spaces.
The highlight of the event is the guided tours of five shelters in Valencia, conducted in small groups with sessions in both Spanish and Valencian. The shelters available for visits include the Valencia City Hall Shelter, the Serranos Street Shelter, the IES Lluís Vives Shelter, the Falla Ripalda-Sogueros Shelter, and the Vedruna – Sagrado Corazón School Shelter.
Guided tours of the shelters will take place on Saturday, April 18, at 11:00 h (Spanish), 12:00 h (Valencian), 13:00 h (Spanish), 16:00 h (Spanish), 17:00 h (Valencian), and 18:00 h (Spanish). On Sunday, April 19, the times will be 11:00 h (Spanish), 12:00 h (Valencian), and 13:00 h (Spanish). Reservations are essential due to limited capacity. In addition to the shelter tours, Saturday, April 18, will feature an open day with free access throughout the day to three of the city's most visited monuments: the Lonja de los Mercaderes, the Serranos Towers, and the Quart Towers.
The program kicks off on Friday, April 17, at the City Hall shelter (Arzobispo Mayoral Street, 1) with an afternoon focused on the historical value of these spaces. At 17:30 h, the conference series will be presented. At 18:00 h, Amalia Pérez-Juez Gil will give a lecture on “Civil War and Dictatorship Heritage: What are we talking about?”. Finally, at 19:00 h, José María Azkárraga Testor will present “The Air-Raid Shelters in the City of Valencia”.
