The Coordinator of Musical Societies of Valencia, with the support of the City Council, is organizing a conference on April 18 at the Palau de la Música to discuss and promote equality within music bands.
The event, part of the Juntas sonamos mejor / Juntes sonem millor project, will begin at 10:30 AM with a round table. During this session, various initiatives undertaken by different entities to foster equality will be presented, aiming to gauge the level of awareness among their members.
Throughout the day, activities promoted by the Coordinator itself will be reviewed, including awareness workshops, a concert series dedicated to women, a composition competition for women, and social media visibility campaigns. Additionally, projects developed by the Musical Society of Benifaraig and the Campanar Music Band will be highlighted.
The Musical Society of Benifaraig will share its experience with the project Notes de Canvi, II Jornades de dones i música, which held its second edition in March. This initiative seeks to make visible the role of women composers in music history and integrate a gender perspective into the center's usual repertoire.
For its part, the Campanar Music Band will present its activities and the book Quin serà el meu instrument, authored by Lucia Saiz and Marta Herrero, with illustrations by Nuria Poveda. This publication stems from a project analyzing gender inequality in music bands, highlighting the lack of female role models, stereotypes in instrument choice, and the low presence of women in leading roles.

"We continue to work on the issue of equality in our collective, and this year we believed it was a good time to share what we are doing from the Coordinator's equality commission and also for the musical societies to tell us what they are developing, because we know that many are already very sensitized and carry out very interesting activities."
Following the round table, the conference will conclude with the concert Maria Callas: L'amour est un oiseau rebelle, performed by the Ensemble Vadya. This chamber ensemble comprises Raquel Roig (soprano), Miriam Cárcel (clarinet), Virginia Quiles (clarinet), and Cristina de Juan (piano). The program will feature operatic arias performed in an engaging manner, with visual and textual support, to explore the figure of Maria Callas through excerpts from her memoirs and letters.

"This conference serves as a meeting point to exchange information and reflections with the aim of continuing to work in this area and to develop the Coordinator's Equality Plan in the near future."
