The Valencia City Council has activated an informative measures protocol (Type 1 Episode) due to the persistent Saharan dust intrusion expected to affect air quality. This measure aims to minimize citizens' exposure to suspended PM10 particles, which are forecast to reach their peak concentration between Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Among the main recommendations from the council, the public is urged to use public transport instead of private vehicles to reduce polluting emissions. Additionally, intense outdoor exercise is discouraged, especially in parks and open areas, for the duration of the dust episode.
Emergencies asks people with respiratory problems to wear masks due to the loss of air quality.
The Generalitat's Emergency Coordination Center has emphasized the importance of protecting individuals with pre-existing conditions. Saharan dust not only tints the sky a whitish color but also introduces particles that can be harmful to the respiratory system. Therefore, asthmatic individuals or those with chronic respiratory diseases are advised to wear masks when outdoors and to keep windows closed at home.
This dust episode coincides with a significant meteorological shift. After a Friday with temperatures exceeding 25 degrees Celsius, the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) forecasts a sharp temperature drop for Sunday, with overcast skies and the arrival of rainfall. These rains, due to the dust load in the air, could occur as 'mud,' helping to clear the atmosphere but leaving visible deposits on vehicles and urban furniture.
