Bioparc Valencia is experiencing a period of profound sadness following the death of the elephant Miri. The incident occurred during a routine interaction with the rest of the herd, an event that has surprised the park team and left a heavy emotional toll on its keepers.
According to the center, everything happened during a normal coexistence moment among the animals. In one of these interactions, the male of the group accidentally caused an injury with one of its tusks, which reached a major artery. The hemorrhage was immediate, and despite the rapid intervention of the veterinary team, nothing could be done to save her life.

The herd is now composed of two adult females, one male, and the two calves born within the European conservation program for the African savanna elephant. These calves, Makena and Malik, represent a point of hope today in a project that seeks to ensure the future of a critically endangered species.
The African elephant faces a critical situation, having lost more than 96% of its population in the last century. For this reason, centers like Bioparc are part of international conservation programs that work both in the wild and under human care to maintain a reserve population with sufficient genetic diversity.
Amidst the grief over Miri's loss, the park team insists that the work continues. They do so, they explain, with the responsibility and also the emotional burden of those who live daily with animals they not only care for but feel are part of their daily lives.
