Taxi associations have released a protest schedule after months without progress on their demands. According to a sector spokesperson, the situation has reached a breaking point, with concentrations planned for April 29, May 7, and May 15 in Alicante, Castellón, and Valencia.
One of the main grievances is the imbalance in access conditions for the activity. While obtaining a taxi license requires a municipal public tender and strict compliance with demanding requirements, VTCs enter the market with much more lenient conditions. A sector spokesperson noted that investments for a taxi license can reach 160,000 euros in cities like Valencia, while VTCs find legal loopholes and operate with fewer demands.
“"For a taxi license, they ask for reports, driver training exams, requirements, and exhaustive control. They have found legal loopholes and are operating with fewer demands."
The sector also denounces the lack of control over the constant increase in VTC authorizations. It is estimated that there are over 5,000 applications in process, and more than 800 licenses have been granted in the last year in the Comunitat Valenciana. Furthermore, they criticize irregularities such as invalid insurance or vehicles with different license plates for the same driver, and the Administration's lack of transparency in providing concession resolutions.
Another point of conflict is the use of VTCs for urban journeys, which, according to taxi drivers, violates state regulations limiting these vehicles to interurban services. They demand immediate reinforcement of inspections and a tougher regional sanctioning regime to deter irregularities, as well as greater clarity in jurisdictional responsibilities between administrations.
The taxi sector explicitly asks the Conselleria not to grant urban authorizations to VTCs, arguing that the value of VTC licenses would fraudulently skyrocket. They also defend their regulated fare model against the VTCs' price freedom, questioning whether they are truly cheaper and opposing the publication of fixed prices.
