The deputy spokesperson for the PP in Les Corts, Laura Chulià, has accused the president of the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation (CHJ), Miguel Polo, of attempting to "cover up his negligence on the day of the flood and his lack of capacity to make decisions at a critical moment with insults." These statements were made after Polo's appearance before the investigation committee on the flood in Congress.
The CHJ official insisted that the Cecopi meeting on the day of the tragedy, which caused 230 deaths, was "chaos" because "those who had to make decisions" were not doing so. He also accused the spokesperson for the Consell and Minister of Agriculture, Miguel Barrachina, of being a "liar" and of "talking nonsense".
In a statement, Chulià lamented the "improper and deeply disrespectful tone" used by Polo, asserting that "his insults are the best demonstration of his management incapacity and the lack of decisions he made on the day of the tragedy." The 'popular' deputy added that Polo should dedicate time to implementing the pending emergency plans for the 18 reservoirs directly dependent on the CHJ.
The PP deputy recalled that the CHJ has pending emergency plans for all reservoirs under its jurisdiction in the Comunitat Valenciana, representing "18 breaches in 18 hydraulic infrastructures fundamental to the safety of thousands of Valencians." She emphasized that the CHJ "breaches the obligations set out in the law," while the Generalitat has fulfilled its responsibilities.
Furthermore, she warned that "the Forata dam" was in breach on the day of the flood, and continues to be so today, regarding the safety review required by law, which should have been completed in 2022. Polo confessed to having direct information about the reservoir's situation but "remained silent".
The deputy spokesperson indicated that, "according to the operating regulations, the standing committee chaired by Miguel Polo, as president of the CHJ, along with three other members of this entity, was the body that directed, held responsibility for, and made decisions regarding the Buseo dam on the day of the flood".
Finally, Chulià stressed that Miguel Polo "is not a technician detached from politics, but a former socialist councilor from Titaguas appointed by the Government of Pedro Sánchez," lamenting "the partisan use of a tragedy that demands rigor, truth, and institutional responsibility".
