The Government has approved the new State Housing Plan, which includes a series of measures and investments to address the housing problem, with a focus on preventing fraud in public allocations.

This plan seeks to reform the housing sector, bringing Spain closer to European standards. One of the key measures is the prohibition of public housing from becoming private property over time, an initiative that the Government considers fundamental to prevent speculation.
Furthermore, the Government has included in the legislative package a set of specific measures to prevent fraud in the allocation of public housing. These actions have been prompted by cases uncovered in Alicante, where relatives of some local councilors benefited.
The Ministry believes that the impossibility of losing protected housing status already reduces incentives for fraud, but has decided to incorporate additional protections. The implementation of this requirement will be a condition for access to the funds that the Government makes available to the Autonomous Communities for public housing promotions.
Although the plan addresses an important need, its approval has been marked by political polarization, with frontal opposition from some parties. The search for agreements that guarantee the implementation of the approved measures remains a challenge.
