The city of València is witnessing a transformation in its cultural offerings, with venues like Cines Babel, ABC, and the Bangarang bookstore hosting innovative proposals that go beyond traditional formats, fostering participation and community building.

From PowerPoint Party sessions to inexperienced film clubs or cultural trivia nights, various initiatives are redefining the cultural experience in València. These proposals diverge from conventional programming to offer more informal and participatory formats, where the audience ceases to be a mere spectator and becomes an active part of the event.
These spaces, which are not presented as essential cultural events, succeed in generating a sense of community, allowing individuals to attend alone without feeling isolated. The goal is to create an environment where the programming is important, but so is well-being and interaction among participants.

"I have always understood cinemas as a cultural container, where although the main activity is watching movies, other proposals can also be hosted."

Guillem Beltrán López · Partner at Cines Babel
Guillem Beltrán López, a partner at Cines Babel, highlights that these venues are versatile cultural containers. One example is the PowerPoint Party, driven by Álvaro Góngora, which is already in its seventeenth edition and has found a new home at Cines Babel. This proposal invites participants to present various topics with slides, fostering creativity and interaction. Additionally, on April 13th, a weekly writing workshop will begin with poet Elsa Moreno.
Another example is the Inexperienced Film Club at Cines ABC, created by Melany Domínguez of It’s OK Generation. This initiative, with its next session on May 8th featuring Spike Jonze's film Her, proposes watching a movie in a group and discussing it afterward, without needing to be a film expert, but rather sharing the emotions it evoked. Access is granted through a lottery to ensure participants do not know each other beforehand.
Finally, the Tremendo Trivial at L’Ermità bar, launched by Fiona Songel and Albert Martínez in 2019, weekly gathers about fifty people to compete in general knowledge questions. This playful and participatory format has created a loyal community and has proven its ability to fill venues during the week, offering a different leisure alternative. The next event is scheduled for April 15th.
