The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía hosts from April 25 to May 9 the performance of Salome, Richard Strauss's opera that shook the 20th-century musical landscape with its innovative and disturbing proposal.

This work, based on Oscar Wilde's controversial play, premiered on December 9, 1905, in Dresden and generated a significant cultural impact. Its combination of fascination, enthusiasm, and scandal subverted the moral and aesthetic codes of the era, establishing itself as an essential title in the programming of major opera houses.
More than 120 years after its premiere, Salome remains fundamental to understanding the evolution of 20th-century musical and theatrical language. In just 1 hour and 40 minutes, the opera immerses the audience in an operatic thriller that explores themes such as incest, obsession, revenge, and necrophilia, with immeasurable expressive power.
The Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana reunites with this work, which it performed sixteen years ago, under the direction of James Gaffigan, the institution's former music director. The staging is by Damiano Michieletto, one of today's most influential creators, who offers a contemporary and psychological interpretation of the drama.

"Salome is a family story, one of those you read about in newspapers: diabolical couples, incest... Domestic tragedies that occur with everyone's complicity. Added to this is the tortuous relationship between mother and daughter. A confrontation that in some aspects recalls the dynamics of Hamlet."

The cast brings together top-tier performers from the German repertoire, with soprano Vida Miknevičiūtė in the lead role, making her operatic debut in Spain. She is joined by Nicholas Brownlee as Jochanaan, John Daszak as Herodes, and Michaela Schuster as Herodías, among other prominent figures.
The five performances of Salome are scheduled for April 25 and 29, and May 3, 6, and 9. Tickets can be purchased through the theater's sales channels, including the box office and its website.
