Falla Pedro Cabanes – Juan XXIII has won the special prize in the ‘El Racó del Reciclatge’ campaign, a sectoral project focused on introducing circular economy dynamics and waste separation into the heart of Valencia's festivities. The winning commission has decided to donate the 3,000 euros prize money to the Spanish Association Against Cancer and will also enjoy a giant paella to celebrate the award with all its members. This initiative was coordinated by the Third Vice Presidency and Ministry of Environment of the Generalitat Valenciana, the Valencia City Council, and the environmental organization Ecoembes.
The award ceremony took place at the headquarters of the Junta Central Fallera through a certified digital draw that ensured the transparency of the selection among the more than 100 commissions that reached the final phase of the contest. Attendees included the Fallera Mayor of Valencia, Carmen Prades; the Secretary General of the Junta Central Fallera, Nicolás Garcés; and the Ecoembes delegate for the region, Sonia Poveda. To recognize the collective effort, the 244 Fallas that originally joined the initiative received a commemorative gift made from recycled cardboard.
The core of the campaign involved each commission setting up an educational and fun station in their own 'casal' (headquarters) to learn how to correctly recycle light packaging, cans, cartons, paper, and cardboard during the festival days. This space was designed with a highly participatory approach, paying special attention to children and young people. For the setup of the recycling points, organizers distributed a kit including a decorative backdrop, personalized signage with each group's name, and a manual of good environmental practices adapted to the festive routine.
