The new facility will have a capacity for 79 spaces, divided into 60 for articulated buses and 19 for standard buses. This project, deemed "strategic" by the city council, is crucial for addressing the growing demand for public transport in the city.
EMT Valencia recorded historic passenger records in 2024 and 2025, exceeding 120 million. The new depot will allow for an increase in the fleet, which had been "stagnant for over 20 years," growing from the current 496 vehicles to 530.
This fleet expansion is complemented by an investment of 118 million euros in the purchase of 222 new buses, including 120 electric, 98 hybrid articulated, and four minibuses. The delivery of these vehicles began last year and will continue until early 2027.
The Safranar garage will be completed in the second quarter of 2027, with partial use as parking possible nine months after construction begins. Additionally, two further projects have been tendered for 4.3 million euros to install 24 additional electric charging points at the North and Sant Isidre depots.
Currently, electrification works are underway at the North Depot, costing 7.9 million euros, which will install 70 charging points and increase electrical capacity. These works are in an advanced stage and are expected to be operational by the end of the year.
The total investment, amounting to nearly 20 million euros, will enable the transition from two to three garages, increasing parking spaces from 497 to 576, and charging stations from 22 to 168, while boosting electrical capacity from 2 MW to 12 MW.
Jesús Carbonell, the Councilor for Security and Mobility, highlighted the commitment to clean vehicles, stating that over 91% of the EMT fleet will be electric or hybrid by 2027, compared to 55% in 2023. Electric buses will increase from 4% to 27%.
Carbonell emphasized that "we are committed to more EMT" and that, anticipating increased passenger numbers and fleet growth, investments continue in facility electrification and the new Safranar depot.
