The Benlliure House Museum in València has recently incorporated three new works by painter José Benlliure (1855-1937), acquired by the València City Council for 30,010.11 euros, which are now on public display.

The paintings, titled La doma, En la Posada del Sol, and Campamento gitano, were purchased last December from the auction house Arca Online València S.L. After a minor conservation intervention on one of them, the works are now part of the permanent exhibition at the artist's former home, located at number 23 on Blanqueria Street.
These three pieces are prominent examples of José Benlliure's production during his stay in Rome, a city where he settled in 1879 and resided for over thirty years. During that period, the painter dedicated himself to creating small panels with anecdotal themes, characterized by great detail, loose and precise brushwork, and vibrant colors, which achieved great success in the European art market.

"With this acquisition, we incorporate into the Benlliure House Museum's collection three representative works from the painter's Roman period, which was scarcely represented in the municipal collections. This acquisition also restores the coherence and continuity of the museum's narrative, following the removal last year of the temporary deposit that had previously filled this gap and the consequent void in the institution's permanent exhibition discourse, which now adds a new attraction."

La doma (13x19.5 cm) depicts a friar struggling to mount a donkey, while other characters watch amused. En la Posada del Sol (13x19.5 cm) falls within the “casacón” painting style, featuring 18th-century soldiers conversing in a small square. Finally, Campamento gitano (20x30 cm) is a genre scene with twelve characters in a seaside setting.
These acquisitions join other recent additions to the Benlliure House Museum. In the summer of 2023, the Historical and Artistic Heritage Service acquired Sopa en el convento de Asís for 20,065.60 euros. Subsequently, on July 26, 2024, the Local Government Board accepted the donation of the Retrato de Rafael Pastor González, valued at 9,000 euros and painted in 1909 by José Benlliure, donated by Carmen Gemma Pastor Estevan. Finally, on July 17, 2025, Vendedora de maíz was acquired for 4,514.76 euros, a 1920 work also displayed in the permanent collection.
