The town of Montanejos has brought its sustainable tourism strategy to the national stage, participating in the V Iberian Blue Flag Congress for Inland Waters. This event, which took place in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, featured its mayor, who presented the success story of the Fuente de Baños.
Last year, the Fuente de Baños became the first inland river in Spain to receive the Blue Flag, an acknowledgment of the management and protection of its natural environment. During his speech, the municipal representative detailed the actions carried out to protect, organize, and enhance this enclave, considered one of the main environmental, tourist, and economic assets of the municipality.
“"Participating in this congress is an opportunity to showcase the work we have been doing in Montanejos to protect, manage, and promote one of our greatest natural treasures."
The representative emphasized that the Fuente de Baños is not only a scenic and tourist emblem but also an example of how an inland town can move towards a model based on quality, sustainability, and respect for the environment. Obtaining the Blue Flag marked a turning point for the locality, recognizing collective effort and opening new opportunities for projection.
The congress, promoted by the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education, aims to foster the exchange of experiences among municipalities with distinguished inland bathing areas and to reinforce the valorization of these spaces under criteria of quality, safety, and sustainability. This edition also saw the participation of representatives from entities and municipalities such as the Chamber of Reguengos de Monsaraz (Portugal), in addition to the town councils of San Martín de Valdeiglesias and Herrera del Duque, consolidating itself as a key forum for promoting sustainable tourism in inland environments.
