The University of Alicante (UA) has launched Aquasoc, an open-access digital tool for self-assessing social impacts and local capacities in flood risk management, developed by the Socioeconomic Observatory of Floods and Droughts (OBSIS-UA).

This application, focused on flood risk management, was created by the research team of the Department of Sociology at the University of Alicante in close collaboration with the Orihuela City Council. Its development has concentrated on the Orihuela locality and various municipalities in the regions of Vega Baja, Marina Alta, and Marina Baja.
The project is part of an R&D&i program funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. Its main objective is to facilitate municipalities and local entities in evaluating social impacts and strengthening response capacities against potential floods.
Through a guided process, Aquasoc allows for the identification and evaluation of potential social impacts of flood events. It also analyzes the development level of local capacities, both institutional and community, and offers practical recommendations to enhance preparedness and response.

"We believe this tool can be of special interest for the work of institutions and emergency management personnel because it provides relevant information and support in decision-making for flood risk management and facilitates the identification of social impacts and the strengthening of preparedness and response capacities in their area of action."

The application is free and intuitive to use, specifically designed for technical and operational personnel involved in emergency management. For this reason, representatives from the Valencian Agency for Security and Emergency Response, Civil Protection, the Provincial Fire Consortium of Alicante, Red Cross, National Police, and Civil Guard, as well as water management companies and technicians from participating municipalities, have been invited to the presentation.
