The University of Alicante (UA) is hosting this weekend the XXXIX Spanish Chemistry Olympiad, where 120 Secondary and Baccalaureate students will showcase their talent in a demanding competition.

The city of Alicante becomes a meeting point for young scientific talents from all over the country. Participants, who have excelled in their regional phases, now face tests that evaluate not only their knowledge but also their reasoning, analysis, and practical application skills in various areas of chemistry.
The tests cover a wide spectrum of the discipline, from electrochemistry to organic synthesis, including physical chemistry and materials analysis. Although the content is based on the official Secondary and Baccalaureate curriculum, the required level of depth exceeds that of ordinary evaluations, placing students before problems that demand advanced conceptual mastery and notable intellectual agility, as reported by the UA.
This event, promoted by the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, aims to identify scientific vocations, stimulate interest in science at an early age, and contribute to the training of future researchers. A professor of Physical Chemistry at the UA, linked to the organization, emphasizes the importance of these initiatives in detecting talent and offering additional incentives to those with a special interest in science.
The program begins on Friday afternoon with an inaugural address. The core of the competition will take place on Saturday, with sessions dedicated to solving complex problems and theoretical and applied questions. On Sunday, the closing ceremony will be held, recognizing the students with the best results, offering an opportunity for coexistence and contact with the university environment.
In parallel with the Olympiad, the UA also hosts the ninth edition of the Chemistry Conference for Secondary and Baccalaureate Teachers. This complementary initiative is a pedagogical update forum that promotes the exchange of methodologies and reflection on current challenges in chemistry education.
