This investment consolidates a model that the Generalitat claims to be a pioneer in Spain and also strengthens coverage and service quality in the province of Alicante.
The total allocation exceeds 134.25 million euros, of which 58 million are for the operation of the school canteen service and 76.275 million for dining aid. These aids increased by more than 850,000 euros last academic year, which has allowed for greater support to families and maintained equitable access to the service.
Among the measures adopted, the update of the menu price by 10 cents stands out, aiming to adapt it to the real costs of the service and ensure its viability without compromising quality. The Generalitat has also reinforced funding for rural and inland canteens, with increases of up to 30%, and has equated maximum aid to the real cost of the service to prevent economic difficulties from hindering student access to school dining.
“"Our model not only complies, but anticipates the nutritional quality, sustainability, and inclusion standards now required throughout Spain."
This economic effort is accompanied by a commitment to a model based on healthy and sustainable eating, prioritizing fresh fruits, vegetables, and legumes, as well as organic, seasonal, and local products. The Comunitat Valenciana asserts that its system had already applied many of the principles now included in state regulations for years. The autonomous regulation of 2012 already understood school dining as an integral educational space, linked to health promotion, eating habits, and coexistence, integrating varied and balanced menus as a structural requirement.
Furthermore, families have the right to receive periodic information about the menus, a measure that reinforces transparency and family involvement in food education. The Valencian model includes special or dietary menus for health reasons, as well as alternatives for religious or cultural reasons, integrating diversity as an essential component of the service.
The Ministry emphasizes that school dining is much more than a complementary service, as it acts as a learning space for healthy habits, sustainability, and food awareness. The Generalitat's will is to continue improving the system and strengthen coordination with other areas, such as healthcare, to advance towards increasingly healthier school environments.
