El Campello celebrates this April 18 the 125th anniversary of its emancipation from Alicante, an event that culminated in 1901 and marks the beginning of a trajectory of growth, maritime tradition, and tourist development.
The town of El Campello commemorates a historic date, as on this day, 125 years ago, it began its own path in the administrative, social, and economic spheres. That fishing nucleus, which then had 2,770 inhabitants, has undergone a profound transformation to currently exceed 32,000 residents, consolidating itself as a modern and open locality.
The municipality's evolution has been linked to the efforts of generations who have managed to transform a fishing village into a benchmark in the L'Alacantí region, with an economy focused on tourism. The first preserved demographic records, from 1841, already showed a population primarily dedicated to agriculture and the sea.
The origins of El Campello go much further back in time, as evidenced by the archaeological site of La Illeta dels Banyets, one of the most prominent in the province. This enclave, promoted by the City Council and the MARQ Foundation, symbolizes the millennial past on which local history is based, from the Chalcolithic to the Islamic era.
The development of the municipality during the 19th and 20th centuries is documented in the book El viaje de El Campello: 120 años de municipio, milenios de historia, published by the City Council five years ago. The official constitution of the municipality came in 1901 with the election of the first mayor, marking a new stage of autonomy.
Since then, the town has been governed by 32 mayors and one mayoress. To mark this anniversary, the City Council has launched several commemorative initiatives that will be developed throughout the year. Among them, the future “gallery of mayors” stands out, for which citizen collaboration has been requested to collect images of all local leaders since 1901.
Over these 125 years, the arrival of tourism, the urban transformation of Muchavista, the North Zone, and the development of the urban core have positioned El Campello as one of the most prominent municipalities in its surroundings. All this, without renouncing its maritime essence, its community life, and its roots, combining modernity, culture, sustainability, and tradition.
